In this week's Senior Tutor Update, Vivek reflects on the last two weeks and celebrates the good work we have all completed. Equally, Vivek reminds us that we have one very important week to go before the two-week Half Term break, where students will be completing their first longer assessment of the academic year. With the QE Boys 11+ results released this week, Vivek reminds parents of our Year 6 students to email us with their child's score. Finally, Vivek encourages parents of our Year 4 and 5 students to book a place at our first 11+ Parents' Advice Evening of the academic year, if they haven't done so already. Our Director of Studies Rebecca discusses the format of our assessments in Week 6 and shares useful advice on how to prepare for these assessments. She also discusses the importance of starting to build revision materials, such as flash cards and mind maps, right from the start of the academic year.

We are thrilled to announce the outstanding results achieved by the most recent cohort of Year 13 students at Trefoil Tutors. Their dedication and hard work, coupled with the support of our tutors, have certainly paid off, with 87% of our A Level students having achieved an A* or A grades in their A Level subjects. As a result, 88% of our students were offered a place at their first choice university. Congratulations, all - we are incredibly proud of your achievements and cannot wait to see you take the next step in your academic and professional journeys.

We're thrilled to celebrate the incredible achievement of Norwegian author, poet, and playwright, Jon Fosse, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature yesterday!

On the third day of the Nobel Prize awards, we celebrate the remarkable achievements of Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus, and Alexei Ekimov, who have been awarded the prestigious Chemistry Prize for 2023!
Their groundbreaking work in the discovery of quantum dots has illuminated new ways of creating coloured light; these contributions have been nothing short of revolutionary in the world of nanotechnology.

We’re thrilled to continue our series on the remarkable achievements of the 2023 Nobel Prize laureates.
This Tuesday, we had the privilege of witnessing the Physics award being bestowed upon Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L’Huillier. These visionary scientists have left an indelible mark on the world with their groundbreaking work, having pioneered tools that allow us to explore the movement of electrons within atoms and molecules by using pulses of light.

“First and foremost, it is an extremely nurturing environment, which gives a lot of personal attention to each student. Personally, my boys absolutely love coming here and the fact that they love coming here and they still learn is amazing. Some kids will only like going somewhere because they’re going to have a good time and not really get much out of it, but they enjoy coming here - regardless of what time it might be, whether it's eight in the morning or five in the evening - and they get a lot out of it as well.

I think that comes from that nurturing environment, and the fact that Trefoil Tutors takes a lot of time and care in making sure that the material is age appropriate, and is appropriate for whatever target you’ve set yourself, whether it’s the 11+ or A Levels, or GCSEs. A lot of care goes into the material they provide, the way they approach the lessons, and also the planning they do. It is really everything you’d want from a tuition centre, and we cannot say enough good things about it and our experience has been only positive. In this week's Senior Tutor Update, Vivek does his best impression of a newsreader, summarising a busy week at Trefoil. Vivek reminds parents of the continued building work taking place in the car park. Vivek goes on to inform parents about the first set of academic monitoring emails that will be sent this week. With the cold season upon us, Vivek encourages students to attend lessons face-to-face if they are well enough to do so, but equally, to make use of the calling-in facility if they are unwell. Vivek also reminds students to complete corrections and begin their revision for the assessment in Week 6. With parents of our students in mind, Vivek proudly announces the start of the event schedule at Trefoil, with the 11+ Parents' Advice Evening taking place on Monday 16th October. Our Director of Accounts Milda brings two important announcements. Firstly, our full year payment discount is available until the end of the Half Term (16 October). Parents are welcome to secure their child's place for the full academic year and receive an additional £100 discount per subject. Secondly, Milda reminds parents of how important it is to join our courses at the start rather than mid-way through the year, and encourages parents to review the available places in the range of subjects we teach at Trefoil Tutors.

The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste is all about making people aware of how much food is being wasted between harvest and retail and in the home. This year’s focus is all about taking action to transform the food system to reduce the waste created.

We are delighted to introduce you to our English Tutor Kishan Ganatra. Although Kishan has been teaching with us for over a year, we are proud to announce that this academic year, he has now joined our teaching team on a full-time basis, teaching English to students from Year 3 to Year 11.

Having completed his PGCE course at the Institute of Education and obtained his teaching qualification, Kishan is an excellent tutor who has firmly established a reputation for delivering engaging and purposeful lessons to our students. With an outstanding academic record, Kishan is a graduate from the University of Nottingham with a BA in English and an alumnus of Haberdashers’ Boys’ School.

In this week's Senior Tutor Update, our Senior Tutor Vivek reviews the first Assessment Week of the academic year and reminds students of the good routines we’ve been establishing. Additionally, with cross-year examinations usually taking place in schools in the coming months, Vivek discusses a number of effective revision methods building on VAK theory, which will be helpful to all our students regardless of their age. Our Director of Operations, Armine, reminds parents that works are still taking place on the upper level of Theobald Court car park. Armine presents the events that will be taking place this Term, the 11+ Parents Advice Evening and Parents Social Evening. Year 4 and Year 5 parents should expect the invitations for signing up to the 11+ Advice Evening in their inboxes in the upcoming days.

Registration open for 11+ mock examinations during the October Half Term!

With the 11+ entrance examinations season having already begun, we would like to remind Year 6 students to book their place in our Mathematics, Reasoning and English mock examinations that will take place during the October Half Term.

The mock examinations are modelled on 11+ entrance examination papers to Independent Schools in the North London area.

The Mathematics mock examination papers are written by Vivek Gathani, our lead Mathematics tutor who helped write and mark the 11+ entrance examination papers when teaching at Haberdashers' Boys' School.

The English mock examination papers are written by Milda Gathani, our lead English tutor who has been preparing pupils for 11+ entrance examinations to grammar and independent schools since 2013.

The Reasoning mock examination papers are written by Rebecca Wolffe, our lead Reasoning and Science tutor with 10 years of teaching experience and previously Director of Science at Verulam School in St Albans.

The mocks will take place at our premises in Elstree (5 Theobald Court, Theobald Street, WD6 4RN), with students attending the mock examinations in person.

Each 2-hour-long exam session will contain:

• an introduction to the paper structure by the tutor
• a brief Q&A session for the students about the 11+ process
• sitting the 60-minute-long examination
• a 15-minute break while the tutor marks the papers
• a review of the paper highlighting common mistakes

Students have the opportunity to sit a different mock examination paper each day for Mathematics, Reasoning and English.
