Happy birthday, William Shakespeare!

Although we don't really know when the great English playwright was born (and, indeed, there is plenty of debate over his identity to begin with!), the 23rd of April is traditionally observed as Shakespeare's birthday.

Today is the best day to learn some fun facts about William Shakespeare, so here are 5!

  1. He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, which is less than two hours away from the Trefoil Tutors office.
  2. During his lifetime, William Shakespeare wrote at least 37 plays for the theatre and over 150 poems.
  3. He introduced more than 1,700 words into the English Language that are still used today. Some of these words include: critic, lacklustre, lonely, bedroom, downstairs, gossip, hurry and traditional.
  4. The longest word used in Shakespeare’s work is ‘honorificabilitudinitatibus’ and it means ‘invincible glorious honorableness’.
  5. William Shakespeare started his career as an actor and actually played the ghost in his own play ‘Hamlet’ when it was performed in theatres.
